spring trolling

Ice-out is a much anticipated event among Maine fishermen. This is partly because many anglers spend lots of time during the winter tying flies and dreaming about the first day they can get out on the water to use them. Mostly, however, it is due to the fact that some of the largest salmon and trout caught on many lakes are taken during the first couple weeks of the season.

Spring trolling typically involves using light tackle to present smelt imitating lures and flies within ten feet of the surface. We also do some casting around brook mouths and shoreline structure when anglers express an interest in doing so. Many early season trips are done in my 20-foot boat that has a canvas roof and windows that can be employed when the weather is cold or rainy. We also have boats stashed on a number of remote smaller lakes and ponds that are readily accessible to other anglers.

Spring trolling trips in my large boat are designed to accommodate two anglers. A third person can be added for an additional charge of $30. Small boat trips into remote lakes can only accommodate two anglers. Full day trips cost $310 and include lunch. Half day trips cost $200 and include soft drinks and a snack. Custom itineraries can be arranged upon request.

"I'm glad we came early (in the season) like you suggested. I'd trade cold fingers for the fish we caught any time."
