Taking a fly casting lesson is a lot like taking a golf
or ski lesson. It isn’t absolutely necessary, but certainly
can help to get you on the right track a lot faster
than if you try to figure things out on your own. I
have completed a fly casting instructor's course
with Macauley Lord, author of the LL Bean Fly-Casting
Handbook, and am a Certified Casting
Instructor with over 30-years of fly casting experience.
Although I offer group casting lessons, much of the instruction that
I do is private. A one-hour private casting lesson
is $50. For beginners, we usually spend 15-minutes
or so on the assembly of tackle and a few basic
knots. Then, we move on to the basic pick-up
and delivery of line, along with false casting and
shooting line. A two-hour lesson is the optimum length
and costs $85. This includes videotape analysis of
your casting technique and exposure to the double haul
and roll casts. Veteran anglers can also benefit from
a casting lesson, especially if you want to increase
your casting distance, learn how to
deal with wind, or begin to fish in salt water.
Casting lessons are fairly informal and usually scheduled on a
spur-of-the-moment basis. No registration form or deposit is required.
The best way to arrange a casting lesson is to call or send an email. Be sure to include a preferred date (a range of dates
is better) and a call-back phone
number. I will get back to you within a couple of days.
A private lesson is a great way to improve your fly casting and is usually
a lot of fun !! |
