basic fly casting

The goal of our Basic Fly Casting School is to provide students with enough casting skills to allow them to fish effectively on their own. At the beginning of the session, we show how to assemble your fly tackle and demonstrate the elements of a four-point cast. But this is a hands-on school, so most of your time will be spent with a fly rod in hand working on your own casting skills. Although most instruction is done in small groups, casting error analysis and correction suggestions will be offered on an individual basis. Videotape analysis of your casting stroke will also be provided. Proper loop control will be emphasized throughout the session.

Our first 2008 Basic Fly Casting Schools will meet at the University of Maine in Orono the weekend of April 19 and April 20 from 9am to 3pm. Tuition is $55. Please click on the button below to learn more and sign up.

Equipment
We encourage students to use their own fly rods and reels at our casting schools. But it isn’t necessary to purchase brand new equipment just to come to class. If you indicate that you need a fly rod and reel on the registration form, we can provide it for you. We also do a ‘cast around’ at the end of the program, where you will have a chance to cast your fellow student’s rods and sample some high-end equipment provided by the instructor.

Our Introduction to Fly Fishing School is a great companion to this Basic Fly Casting course. The fly fishing school is held indoors during the winter months and will teach you the fundamentals of fly fishing so that you’ll be ready to catch fish in the spring. "I struggled with fly casting for years. I should have taken your course long ago ."
Tom R, Lincoln, ME

"I thought I would be self-conscious about having all of my casting mistakes recorded on videotape. But that turned out to be the most beneficial part of the course."
Dave B, Veazie, ME
